What color should healthy gums have?

The color of healthy gums is a pale pink, the shades on a pink base are to be considered normal.

There are many colors considered healthy, pink and the various shades are the most common, but much depends on genetic factors or even exposure to sunlight.

In fact, the sun's rays can stimulate the production of melanin in the gums, hence the dark color of the same.  In some cases, it may also be completely normal to have black or brown gums, regardless of skin color.

The color of the gums can change depending on the health, not only of the mouth but of the whole body.

In antiquity the violet or black gums represented a clear symptom of lead poisoning, a condition often found on merchant ships that were at sea for long periods and whose crews used to consume canned supplies, often sealed with lead.

When gum is healthy

Healthy gingiva is compact to the touch, smooth and follows a wavy pattern that covers the dental collar. In case of infection, the mucosa is swollen, convex and slightly detached from the tooth.

Why do gums change color?

The gums are sprayed by blood vessels so it is quite normal that they change color depending on the blood supply to it. An excessively irrigated gingiva can mean that there is an inflammation in place.

Why do gums become dark red?

As we said earlier, a dark red or over-sprayed gum is an inflamed gum. The juice of the speech focuses on the word "become" as it is precisely the transition condition from the light pink or its nuances (perfectly normal) to the dark red to arouse the first alarm bells.

Having clear gums is normal?

Having clear gums is normal, but it is not normal to have white patches on the gums. These white spots may be the symptom of an infection. Normally fungal in nature, this inflammation is characterized by small fungi that proliferate in the mouth and the appearance of white spots on the gums, inside of the cheeks and tongue.

The outburst is caused by Candida mushrooms, the small white spots that appear on the gums.

It can occur after taking certain medicines such as antibiotics. In this case, the bacteria attack the oral cavity and the roots of the teeth which in turn produce whitish excrescences. The treatment to be taken consists of taking an oral antifungal prescribed by the attending physician.

White gums can also be symptoms of anemia.

The most common symptoms are:

- the red color of the blood and rosy of the mucous membranes and of the skin determined by haemoglobin;
- a white color of the gums and lips, together with a pale face color;
- a feeling of exhaustion and tiredness that has lasted for several days.

Tobacco consumption, in addition to being a bad habit, represents a serious threat to our oral hygiene, it is not rare that the gums take on a whitish color in smokers.
